Sw80k Route outline

 

Section1               Start at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre to 473 874 (path junction on Wenlock Edge)

Section 2              473 874 to Carding Mill Valley Tearoom

Section 3              Carding Mill valley Tearoom to Pole Bank

Section 4              Pole Bank to Bridges

Section 5              Bridges to Bishops Castle via Stiperstones

Section 6              Bishops Castle to Clun following the Shropshire Way

Section 7              Clun to the Shropshire hills Discovery Centre (Finish).

 

Shropshire Way 80K route guidelines

Section 1 Start (Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre) to self-clip at 473 874 (path Junction on Wenlock Edge)

Start at the rear of the Discovery Centre. Go through the mammoth tusks then take the first left before the community garden on a path to a gate.

Keep ahead then fork right to go over a white metal bridge

Cross the bridge then head left, keeping the river on your left. Walk to a kissing gate at the road.

Turn right for 20m, then cross the road to take the lane turning to the left.

Continue on the lane until it becomes a path. Follow the path (river to your left) for one mile to a footbridge.

At bridge, cross the river, then turn right keeping the river on your right. Continue to road. Turn right, cross ford on the foot-bridge then take the road on your left.

After 150m, take the wide path on the right which leads up onto Wenlock Edge. Climb this path to enter the woods, and stay on this path as it climbs and bears left for a further 4km to reach the self-clip at 473 874

Section 2 Self-clip at 473 874 to Carding Mill Valley Tearooms

From here, head on the path to the left which heads down hill

Stay on this path to leave the wood where it bears left, heading down to a footbridge.

Cross the bridge and then bear half right to meet a road.

Cross the road and keep left around the field to meet a stile.

Over stile onto track. Turn right and then ahead into field, heading straight across on a well-defined path to meet a stile.

Over stile into open field then head NW looking for a finger post,  where you head slight right to an oak tree, then look slight right for  a stile in the fence, here head half right, over stile then ahead with hedge on left to reach a wood.

Over stile on left, follow path through wood to another stile. Over this then head half left across field to gate.

Path goes through the car park of Acton Scott working farm and museum

Go through gate to road. Turn left and continue for 400m to cross roads

Here turn right and continue along the lane until it bends sharp right.

100m after right hand bend, go over a stile on the left to entre a field. Go slight left to stile. Over stile the head slight right, heading down then up.

Look for a stile on the right which takes you onto Ragleth hill.

Over stile then go steeply up hill to reach the self-clip on the summit.

After summit, head along ridge until the end where the path heads steeply downhill to meet a path at a fence line

Head left here keeping the fence on your right.

Turn right at fence corner, heading down to stile. Over stile then on path steeply downhill then over stile as path turns left, then right to come to a road in a housing estate.

Go downhill to the t junction, turn left and head downhill, keeping left to reach the main A49, turn right here to cross at the pedestrian crossing

Cross here then head up Sandford Avenue, crossing the railway line and along the main high street to the t-junction

At the junction, turn right then continue for 400m to the left turn into Carding Mill Valley.

Head up the valley to reach the checkpoint at the National Trust tea rooms at 445 953

 

Section 3 Carding Mill Valley Tearooms to Pole Bank

Leave the checkpoint and turn left to continue up the valley.

Continue through the next car park, over the small footbridge, and follow the path up the valley with the stream on your right

When you get to the stream junction, take the right hand path which climbs steeply up onto the Long Mynd

At the ridge, you reach a t-junction. Here turn left, then after 300m, take the right fork continue for a further 400m, to cross the road at the Shooting Box car park.

Continue on this path for a further 900m to reach the summit of Pole Bank and the self-clip.

 

Section 4 Pole Bank to Bridges

Double back on yourself for 500 m, then turn left on path with the fence on your left.

Go ahead downhill for 1km as track joins from right. Keep heading down hill, through a gate to join a track then a road at a farm. Stay on road to get to the village of Bridges and its pub. Visit the check point here

 From this point, the entire route follows the new Shropshire Way main route, well signposted using the new orange buzzard logo.
