Walks at Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre

Shropshire is a county criss-crossed by footpaths. The Shropshire Way, the county’s flagship way-marked route, comes right past our door, and one of the circular routes is from the Centre to Sallow Coppice, a beautiful bluebell woodland.

The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre also has four way-marked circular walks specially created for our visitors to allow you to explore some of the countryside immediately around the Centre.

The walks vary in length and difficulty so there is something for everyone. Please note that all of the walks were re-routed in 2009. You can purchase them from the Discovery Centre for 50p. Not only do these help you to navigate, they also point out some of the interesting features you can spot along the way.

There are frequent guided walks that start from the Discovery Centre for more information visit our events page.

Riverside Ramble

Distance: 2 miles
Allow 1½ hours to complete the walk.
This is an easy walk for all the family, rambling along the River Onny to the wonderfully peaceful Halford village. Watch out for dippers and kingfishers along the way.

Hills and Dales Hike

Distance: Complete route 6 miles; Shorter route 3 miles
Allow 4 hours to complete the whole walk or 2½ hours for the shorter route.
This is a challenging walk that takes you to Flounders Folly, a lonely tower high in the Shropshire Hills that has recently been restored with Heritage Lottery funds. As well as the tower you can admire two excellent views and climb the southern slopes of the Wenlock Edge, a 425-million-year-old coral reef.

Three Woods Walk

Distance: Complete route 8 miles; Shorter routes 4.5 miles or 5.25 miles
Allow 4 hours to complete the whole walk and at least 2½ hours for the shortest route.

This is a fairly challenging walk with some steep climbs at the start. Explore the woods and fields along the Onny Valley to discover a countryside rich in nature and history. Discover a Civil War battlefield at Whettleton and a hidden Iron Age fortress high up in the woods. Continue on to pass a ‘clapping wicket’ to follow Watling Street, the former Roman road along the edge of a Medieval deer park.

Wart Hill Wander

Distance: Complete route 10 miles; Shorter route 7.5 miles
Allow 5 hours to complete the whole walk and 4 hours for the shorter route.
This is the longest of the Secret Hills Walks and is fairly challenging with some steady climbing at the start and a steep climb up to the summit of the Wart Hill. The route crosses the fields along the Shropshire Way through Sibdon Carwood, climbing to excellent Hopesay Common, then it’s on to Wart Hill fort to return along the old Bishop’s Castle railway on the Onny Trail.
