KS1 History-themed activities

Mary Anning and Dinosaurs NEW FOR 2017

Mary Anning's discoveries and see what she would have made of Shropshire's Silurian fossils, then make your own sea creature fossil. Take part in a virtual excavation or reconstruct dinosaur skeletons using natural materials outside, then meet the Condover mammoth during this chronological trip through prehistory.

Ice Age

How do we know what it was like during the last Ice Age? Why did mammoths go extinct? How were copies made of the real Condover mammoth bones? This session is guaranteed to feed enquiring young minds.

Young Darwin

Discuss Darwin's childhood and take a thinking walk. Then either collect plants to to press or go on a mini beast hunt. Follow in Darwin's footsteps and carry out one of his experiments. This session is guaranteed to feed enquiring young minds.

Cooking a Spring meal

In the morning, help collect and process nettles, sheep sorrel, fat hen and elderflowers for soup and fritters and have them with a wholegrain porridge - the type of spring meal that would have been eaten from the Neolithic, Iron Age, Anglo-Saxon and Viking periods. Your afternoon activities will depend on which part of the curriculum you wish to link in - you could make twine frm the nettle stems.

Secret Hills Exhibition

Take a fascinating journey through Shropshire’s past: meet a mammoth, explore an Iron Age roundhouse and take off with our film panorama that drifts across the local landscape like a hot air balloon. Focus tasks will also challenge the children during their time in the exhibition.

Free to any school booking a led activity, otherwise £2.75 per child aged five or over; one adult to every ten children free of charge, additional adults £3.25.


The standard price structure for the led activities are:

  • 25 children or less – £90 + VAT
  • 26 to 35 children (or one class, whichever number is larger) – £120 + VAT
  • 36 to 50 children – £180 + VAT
  • 51 to 70 children – £240 + VAT
