Understand the Past

We are happy to bring our activities to you, so no need for an expensive coach. We bring all the equipment, you provide the children.

As with all our activities, the Outreach Programme at Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre mades learning fun, so whether you'd like us to come into your classroom, after school or holiday club, our activities will entertain and educate your group.

Mary Anning and Fossils - NEW FOR 2017

Learn about Mary Anning's life and make your own fossil. Then carry out a virtual dinosaur excavation - what dinosaur will you find?
Suitable for: 1 3/4hr workshop suitable for groups upto 30 children from KS1
Curriculum links: History 
Availability: All year apart from July - August
Price: £100 + VAT, additional workshops £50 + VAT

Fantastic Fossils

Make your own fossil and look at evidence of life from the distant past.
Suitable for: KS1 and KS2; 1 1/4 hour workshop for groups of up to 20 children
Curriculum links: History, Science - Rocks Y3
Availability: September – May
Price: £100 + VAT, additional workshops £50 + VAT

Archaeology - examining the past

Have your class try their hand investigating actual and photographed remains from four different periods of time: Modern, Victorian, Iron Age and Jurassic.
Suitable for: KS2; 1 1/2 hour workshop for groups of up to 30 children

Availability: September – May
Price: £100 + VAT, additional workshops £50 + VAT

Hands-on Stone Age

Find out about changes across the Stone Age and then return to that era by using sensory stimuli.  Become a Stone Age child and experience for yourself some of the activities they would have done whilst preparing to hunt.
Suitable for: KS2; 1 1/2 hour workshop for groups of up to 30 children
Curriculum links: History
Availability: September – May
Price: £100 + VAT, additional workshops £50 + VAT

Hands-on Iron Age

Become an Iron Age child and experience for yourself some of the activities they would have done: prepare wool for weaving, use a sling shot, paint your face with woad, make a coil pot and grind wheat.
Suitable for: KS2; 1 1/2 hour workshop for groups of up to 30 children
