Welcome to a brand-new event as part of the SW80K Festival. This one is a little different in that it is almost totally unsupported, but with some real jeopardy built in!

The Concept The idea is to use the Heart of Wales Line railway www.heart-of-wales.co.uk from Craven Arms to get to a destination of your choice so you can run or walk whatever distance you like. Once you disembark, you must return to the Centre via the Heart of Wales Trail www.heart-of-wales.co.uk/experiences  within 24 hours. Simple!

You can do this event as a gentle walk and get back for lunch, in which case you can get off at Broome or Bucknell. Knighton or Knucklas make a decent day’s hike, but if you’re a hard-core trail runner looking to get your hands on the trophy, you will need to look at going to Llanwrtyd, Llandovery or even Llangadog. Don’t be too ambitious though because if you go too Welsh, and don’t get back in time, it’s game over!

Background. The Heart of Wales Line is a railway which runs between Shrewsbury and Swansea, linking many remote towns in mid-Wales, creating an important lifeline for the isolated communities along the route. In 2015, the Heart of Wales Line Trail was created as a way of promoting the line, the communities it serves and the stunning countryside along the way. The trail doesn’t follow the railway, it disappears off into the surrounding hills, returning to the line at each station, so there are many options. This event is designed to raise awareness of and generate interest in this essential service and part of your entry fee will be used to keep this important lifeline afloat.

The Details. You will depart from Craven Arms station on the “Oh My God It’s Early!” train to your chosen stop, carrying one of our event trackers. You then follow the route of the Heart of Wales Line Trail back to Craven Arms, clipping your tally at each of the stations, where some basic refreshments will be available. Other than that, you’re on your own- there is very little hand holding in this event, so you will need to carry everything you need to survive in the wilds for up to 24 hours.

You must follow the Heart of Wales Line Trail throughout your journey and your tracker will be checked on completion. On your return you will receive a hot meal along with a memento and finishers certificate. The winner of the trophy will be the person who goes furthest down the line but still makes in back to the Centre in less than 24 hours after the train leaves Craven Arms station.
