Wildlife survey carried out by our volunteer group
It's not all hard work for our meadows group
Ian and the Onny Meadows Group volunteers have had a varied few weeks working on a range of tasks in the meadows and around the Centre.
Firstly, they carried out some remedial work of the car park– cutting back some of the overhanging vegetation and clearing the parking bays to make sure all the parking spaces are useable– important works considering how busy the Centre is becoming!
They also spent some time giving our new hedges a helping hand, clearing away the thick grass which is competing with them for nutrients and light. Once the hedge plants become established, they will shade out the grasses and weeds, but until them, we give them a little bit of help to make sure they thrive.
But it’s not all hard work! The group also spent a day looking at what had been achieved over the past few years by carrying out a wildlife survey. There were huge increases in the number and variety of insects and wildflowers which shows how making some simple changes to the way we look after our landscape can provide huge benefit to wildlife, proving that nature can recover if it’s allowed the space to do so.
We’re incredibly proud of what’s been achieved in the Onny Meadows and we hope that you will be inspired to leave some of your own garden a little but wilder – who knows what may choose to make its home there if you do?
